A Fun Place Where Mommy Can Laugh, Learn, Love and Cry

Boy or Girl?
Old Wives Tales, is There Any Truth to Them?
While there are many old wives tales indicating whether you are having a boy or girl, is there any truth to them? Some believe yes, and some believe in fact they are just old wives tales.
Now that I am in my 2nd trimester, everyone keeps asking, “What do you think you are having?” To be quite honest, my answer is always, “I really have no idea.” I haven’t gotten the feeling like some expectant mothers do. So, this led me to research some of the old wives tales and see if maybe they can help persuade me in one direction. My husband and I don’t care what we have as long as he or she is healthy. But, it’s still fun to try and guess!
Morning sickness. If you are having morning sickness, then it’s a girl. If you feel great and have none at all, then it’s a boy. Well, I have been feeling great! Thank god! No morning sickness at all! If I follow this old wives tale, then we are having a BOY!
Baby’s Heart rate. They say that if the baby’s heart rate is lower then 140, you are having a boy. Higher than that, it’s a girl. My baby’s heart rate has been around 160 each time the doctor has measured it. If this is true, then we are having a GIRL!
Cravings. Can what you’re craving really indicate the sex of the baby? Some would say absolutely yes! If you are craving sweets, like cake, then you are having a sweet little girl! If you are craving cheese and meats, well, then it’s a boy. I have to say, I am definitely craving cheese and cheeseburgers! And, I would do anything for a big Italian sub, something I would normally never eat. But, unfortunately, pregnant women can not eat cold cuts. So, I have been sticking to my juicy cheeseburgers any chance I get. Maybe this means it’s a BOY!
How you’re carrying. If all your weight is in your belly, people would say it’s a boy. But, if you start to put extra weight on your hips and seem to be getting wider, it’s a girl. This old wives tale is a little too early for me. I only have a small little bump so I am going to have to wait a little longer and see how I am carrying. BOY or GIRL?
“You look better than ever.” Your face is glowing and everyone is telling you how great you look. This could mean it’s a boy. I guess if you aren’t looking so good, which I am sure no one wants to hear, then you may be having a girl. I think I look exactly the same. But, some of my co-workers have been commenting and saying that I have a glow to my face, and that means it must be a boy. I guess I can say BOY for this one!
Chinese gender prediction calendar. My friends swear by this one. Everyone that I know who did it, the gender was correct. You are supposed to take your age at conception, then add it to the month you conceived. If the number is even, it’s a girl and odd, a boy. My number comes up as 40, so I guess if I follow this tale, I am having a girl!
The way the ring swings. Take your engagement ring, not your wedding band, and hang it over your belly on a string or necklace. If it swings back and forth, it’s a girl. If it circles over your belly, then it’s a boy. Ok, if I follow this old wives tale, then I am having a boy and girl and I know I am not having twins! Every time I try this, once it circles and once it swings back and forth. BOY or GIRL?
There may not be any truth to any of these old wives tales. But, it’s sill fun to make guesses and hear what others think you are having. My husband and I have decided to find out the sex. At first, I was not so sure that I wanted to. There are not many surprises in life and this would be the best surprise ever! The anticipation of waiting 9 months would bring the greatest news when the doctors say, “It’s a BOY or It’s a GIRL!” But, if anyone knows me, I am such a PLANNER! There just isn’t any way I could wait, and I am so happy my husband feels the same way. People may say don’t you want to be surprised? But, we are going to be! When we go for that 20 week ultrasound that will be “our” day for our greatest surprise!
Until then, we will have fun with the old wives tales!
