Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder commonly called
ADHD is a pretty common condition that affects a
lot of young children in America and all over the world. It is
sometimes difficult to diagnose because it can be easily mistaken
for simple bad behavior, which is after all pretty normal in
children, from time to time at least.
ADHD kids often have troubles standing still and
paying attention, they are fidgety and have troubles focusing. If
your child shows signs of inattention, lack of focus, hyper
activity, disobedience it might be a good idea to consult your
physician to determine if your child has
ADHD or
not.
People often get scared to know their child has
ADHD, perhaps because of the word disorder. In any
case it is not as bad as it sounds and there is nothing
fundamentally wrong with your child, he or she is just a bit more
of a handful than another kid.
It is a good thing to treat your child's conditions as soon as it
is discovered as
ADHD can impair a child to
fulfill his potential and prevent him or her to fully fit in
society. Indeed, because of their behavior they can be at odds with
their schoolmates and teachers who will view him as a difficult
child. In extreme cases, this can lead the child to be rejected by
his classmates from social activities which of course will be bad
for your child self esteem and morale as children, much like
adults, have an intense desire to fit in and be accepted.
A child with
ADHD and a loner is a combination you
want to avoid as these two characteristics can lead to a negative
loop that would be hard to get out of. Thus you should make a point
to involve your child in a few social activities, preferably some
which involve team spirit, like sports for example. This would be
beneficial for the social development of your kid, teaching him the
values of cooperation and respect of the other, which
ADHD children often lack.
ADHD is not really something that can be detected
within the four doors of your doctor office since it is a behavior
disorder. Your doctor will need to know the common behavior of your
child to make a diagnostic. He or she will ask you a variety of
questions about your child's behavior so it is wise to know your
child's behavior well beforehand. Of course the doctor will also
observe how your child behaves in his office and will talk to him.
Please, if your child doesn't display the symptoms of
ADHD in any significant manner (more on that
later) do not waste your time and your physician's time.
Only take your child for a visit if you feel his or her symptoms
are affecting his/her quality of life and your emotional well
being.
Also not that there is a difference between a child having
ADHD and a undisciplined, badly raised child. If
you failed in your parenting role do not take your child to be
checked for
ADHD but get some parenting courses
and start punishing your child for his misbehavior.
The overwhelming majority of kids if left to their own device will
become little terrors. Too many people simply do not want to be
held accountable for their failures. If you feel this is your case,
simply recognized your shortcomings and start implementing changes
to give your child a solid idea of what is and what is not
acceptable.
